What to Do After a Hail Storm

Hail damage is rarely visible from the street. Granules that shield shingles from UV can be stripped without cracking the surface, and the first 48 hours determine how your insurance claim unfolds.

Document the property before calling anyone. Photograph gutters — granule buildup is direct evidence of shingle impact. Check window screens and AC fins: if soft metals show dents, shingles almost certainly took hits too. Then call your insurer to open a claim before you call a roofer. You are entitled to an independent adjuster visit first. Signing a direction-to-pay before the claim settles can bind you to a scope you never agreed to.

5 Signs Your Roof Needs More Than a Repair

Not every roof problem calls for a full replacement. Some symptoms signal end of life, and patching them individually costs more over time than a single replacement done right.

Granule loss is the most overlooked warning. When the granule layer sheds, it collects in gutters — a palmful of sandy grit after rain means your shingles are past mid-life. Daylight through the attic deck is unambiguous: any speck means water will follow. Multiple leak points in a single season indicate underlayment failure across the full roof, not isolated flashing issues. If repair invoices over three years approach a third of replacement cost, that phase is already over.

Atlas Pinnacle Pristine: The Shingle We Specify Most

When we specify a shingle for a full replacement, the Atlas Pinnacle Pristine earns the nod most often — not because it is the most expensive option, but because it matches the risks Memphis homeowners actually face.

StainGuard Plus algae protection matters more here than in drier regions. Hot, humid Memphis summers and shaded north-facing slopes are exactly where streaking forms; the 15-year warranty is backed by Atlas directly. The Class 4 impact rating reflects ANSI/FM 4473 testing. Many local insurers discount the hail portion of your premium 20–30 percent for a Class 4 shingle — ask your agent before committing to any product, because the savings often cover the cost difference.

Why We Photograph Every Roof Before We Quote

RoofMD is named for the way a good doctor works — no diagnosis without an examination, no treatment plan without evidence. An estimate without photographs is a number with nothing to hold anyone accountable when the job is done.

Every inspection is photographed in sequence: existing conditions, each defect with a close-up and location context, and a numbered reference in the written scope. That record belongs to you — take our scope to a second roofer and ask if they agree. A photographed scope can be independently verified. It also gives your insurance adjuster real documentation rather than a contractor’s verbal summary. The inspection and photo set are always free.

The Anatomy of a Complete Reroof

A line item reading “remove and replace shingles” is missing most of the job. A complete reroof replaces every component from the deck up, and understanding each layer lets you spot the shortcuts that fail within a few years.

The decking is inspected board by board; any board that has absorbed moisture is replaced before anything goes on top. Synthetic underlayment covers the deck, with self-adhering ice-and-water barrier in valleys. New drip edge runs at every eave and rake. Flashing around chimneys, skylights, and penetrations is where most failures begin — we install new metal flashing on every job rather than reusing old pieces with layered sealant. Shingles go on last.

What a Legitimate Roofing Estimate Should Include

An estimate that arrives as a single number is a guess with a price. A professional written scope gives you enough information to verify the work, compare quotes, and hold anyone accountable when the job is done.

It should name specific products by manufacturer, line, and colour. Shingles differ in impact rating, wind warranty, and algae protection, and a vague spec allows mid-job substitution. It should also state explicitly whether the job is a tear-off or an overlay — an overlay voids most shingle warranties and adds structural load. Both warranty terms should appear in writing: the manufacturer’s material warranty and the contractor’s workmanship warranty. Confirm the crew is directly employed, not subcontracted.

When to Repair and When to Replace

Most roofers have a financial incentive to recommend replacement. We tell you when a repair is the right call, because the homeowner who trusts a straight answer comes back when they genuinely need a roof.

A roof under 15 years with a single discrete problem is almost always a repair candidate. Over 20 years the calculus changes, and failure mode matters more than age: a cracked boot is a repair, granule loss across the field is end-of-life. Extent matters — ten percent damage points to repair, forty percent approaches replacement cost and replacement wins. Add three years of repair invoices: if the total nears a third of replacement cost, replacement is already the rational decision.

How Attic Ventilation Affects Your Roof’s Lifespan

Attic ventilation is the most overlooked component of any roofing system. Inadequate ventilation is one of the leading causes of premature shingle failure — and it voids most manufacturer warranties without the homeowner ever knowing either problem exists.

In a Memphis summer, an unventilated attic reaches 150–160°F. The asphalt binder degrades from below while UV degrades it from above — a roof with a 30-year warranty can show visible aging before year 15, classified as an installation condition failure and rarely covered. The solution is balanced airflow: soffit intake and ridge exhaust. Common failures include insulation blocking soffit baffles and ridge vents without the deck opening cut beneath. Before any reroof, ventilation assessment belongs in the scope.

Still have a question?

Call us, or leave your details and we will call you.

How much does a roof inspection cost?
Nothing. Our roof inspection and quote are free, with no obligation. We would rather you decide with the facts in front of you, so we get on the roof, photograph what we find and explain it in plain language.
Can you help with an insurance claim after a storm?
We can document the damage clearly, with photos, measurements and a written summary of what we found, so your adjuster has real evidence to work from. Negotiating the claim itself is between you and your insurer (or a licensed public adjuster), and we would be wary of any roofer who offers to handle that for you.
How long does a roof replacement take?
It depends on the size and pitch of the roof, how many layers come off, and the weather. A straightforward home can be a matter of days; a large, steep roof with dormers and chimneys takes longer. Whoever you hire, get a start date and a plan for bad weather in writing before you sign.
What warranties come with a new roof?
Usually two: the shingle manufacturer's material warranty, and a workmanship warranty from the contractor. Get both in writing before you sign, and check how long each lasts, what it covers, and whether it transfers if you sell the house. Ask us about the shingle line you are considering and we will walk you through it.
What should I do about an active leak?
Call our emergency dispatch line on (901) 305-9136 rather than using the form. Move belongings away from the drip, put a bucket under it, and photograph any damage for your records. A temporary tarp limits the damage until the permanent repair can be scheduled.
Which areas do you serve?
We work in Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett, Cordova, Lakeland, Arlington, Millington, Olive Branch, and Hernando, and we recently re-roofed a large brick home in Germantown, Tennessee, documented from the first photograph to the last. If you are nearby, call and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.
